The sentence passed on Dinesh D'Souza —the filmmaker, writer, and outspoken critic of President Obama—for violating the laws relating to campaign finance, I was horrified to read was the following: "As part of his probation, Mr. D'Souza will also be required to undergo therapeutic counseling."

From Wikipedia: "In the Soviet Union, a systematic political abuse of psychiatry took place and was based on the interpretation of political dissent as a psychiatric problem. It was called "psychopathological mechanisms" of dissent."

Punishment is not therapy; crime is not disease. The Soviets thought that dissent was crime and crime was disease: therefore, with them, dissent was disease. We have not yet reached that point, but "therapy" for illegal campaign contributions is coming uncomfortably close to it.

I agree. Therapy is just a waste of time. It would have been much better for society as whole if the guy just went to jail period.
I believe he accepted therapy as bargain for staying out of jail.

Right, just as long as you don’t dissent with the TSA goons at the airport, or at a school over say something like vaccinations or in the presence of the militarized police.

And if you are a federal government whistle blower shedding light on some abuse of power be it an employee or a soldier, may God help you. See Edwin Snowden or Manning.

Even a passionate rant on Facebook or twitter might bring you a police visit. In the US, authorities view high profile dissenters and their organizations as “terrorists.” A term that can be defined as anything that threatens the status quo.

The only dissent tolerated is the carefully controlled ballot box which is in the pocket of the two party straight jacket.

See Ferguson or Kent St as examples to see how dissent is really tolerated in the USA.
