From Buster Posey's year-end discussion of pitching:

In 2008 there were ~100 pitches thrown over 98 MPH. This year that number was ~11,500.

James Goldcamp writes:

Last spring my son's high school baseball team had 4 pitchers that hit 91 or higher in game and one threw 97 and another 95. (this is not theoretical they have the highly robust trackman system installed at their field getting all pitch speeds and exit velos). The velocity spike is real at all levels.

My kids mid 80s fastball would have been respectable in 70s/80s professional leagues, but alas unless you are a nasty lefty with great stuff or have some tantalizing physical attributes that can be developed, is a D3 / juco profile these days (and generally not worth pursuing unless the d3 is MIT or some other elite school).

Big Al comments:

I wonder about the injury rate.

Stefan Jovanovich responds:

The SF Giants had 4 young pitchers ending the season needing ACL surgery.
