A Father and Son Dialogue
On the principle that "God gave us two ears but only one mouth," I try to learn from my boys twice as often as I teach them. Yesterday, I asked my five-year-old Daniel what he wanted to be when he grows up. He's changed intended "career" several times already in his short life.
Me/ Daniel, what do you want to be when you grow up?
Daniel/ A stay-at-home Dad! [Where did he get this term? Dunno]
Me/ How many children will you have?
Daniel/ Four!
Me/ But what will you do to earn money, pay the bills?
Daniel/ My wife will work!
Me/ Hmmm. Who will your wife be?
Daniel/ Chloe, from my kindergarten class. [Affluent suburbanites name their
daughters 'Chloe', 'Zoe' and the like nowadays]
This was quite a surprise. Earlier in the year, Daniel had complained to the
gym teacher that Chloe was violating the school policy of 'keeping hands and
feet to yourself.' ("She kept poking me!")
Me/ Why Chloe?
Daniel/ She's nice to me! She says 'hi' every day!
Well, I'm not sure Chloe would cotton to the unPrincessly future Daniel has sketched out for her (remember, it's Westport), but I have to admire his industry (as would the Maryland Spec, no doubt). I think Daniel is in for a rude awakening when he comes to understand the pioneering work of Belafonte & Radio 50 years ago.
