Strategy Part III*, by James Sogi

Bruce Lee, The Tao of Jeet Kune Do

  1. Read opponent's moment of helplessness. (Read: "panic")
  2. Study opponent's signs of telegraphing.
  3. Learn to time opponent's second, third moves; and solve the problem should simple attacks fail. (What happens when you enter too soon?)
  4. No passive defense. (Don't just take the losses passively, get the best prices. Adjust leverage proportionate to edge.)
  5. Maintaining a proper fighting distance has a decisive effect on the out come of fighting. All hand to hand combat is an operation of finding a target or of avoiding being a target, it must be a sort of movement. (Distance: July Bomb bounce 61 points; August Katrina correction 41 points (av. 51 pts.); October Refco rebound 57 points 11/3/05)
  6. Generally the riposte is the most effective as it forces the opponent on the defensive. To ensure its effectiveness, the parry and riposte must be made just as the attack is ending, and before the opponent has an opportunity from changing from offense to defense. Counter-time is the essence in the tactical art of Epee. Counter-time is the surest way to draw the opponent's blade into position in which it can be dominated, in such a way as to score a hit without being oneself hit. (25 SD's away from mean stretches supply line thin)
  7. When to strike. Have your opponent force himself to commit to a decided step. you can then be moderately certain of what he is about to do. (Wait for the overlays and/or some confirmation)
  8. A blow is never hit at a mark. It is driven through a mark. (Its hard to achieve both bottom tick and fill size)
  9. Mechanics of a right hook. Aim to drive through the opponent. Be ready to follow up with another solid punch with either hand. Above all, minimize all the above motion so that you will be moving just enough to have the maximum effect without hooking wildly. (Take time building position efficiently at best prices.)
